A 1979 state law that removed liability from hosts whose guests get drunk and hurt themselves cannot be applied to circumstances before the law took effect, a state appellate court ruled. A 3rd District Court of Appeal panel ruled 2 to 1 that Robert Boal and his son, Bruce, of Sacramento County were liable because they furnished alcohol on Oct. 28, 1978, to three young men, all under 21. Two of the men became quadriplegics after being injured in an automobile accident after a party at the Boals’ home. The third young man sustained serious head injuries.
