Player-manager Pete Rose of the Cincinnati Reds, who set baseball’s all-time hit record in September, has been named Man of the Year by The Sporting News.

Football’s Walter Payton and Eddie Robinson, basketball’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Rollie Massimino, hockey’s Wayne Gretzky, boxing’s Michael Spinks and baseball’s Dwight Gooden and Don Mattingly were the other finalists. Peter Ueberroth, now baseball commissioner, won the award in 1984.
