Area Roundup : Bantamweights to Square Off Jan. 20 in Irvine

Two of California’s premier bantamweight boxers, Santa Ana’s Georgie Garcia and Oscar (The Boxer) Muniz, will headline Orange County’s first boxing card of 1986 on Monday, Jan. 20, at the Irvine Marriott Hotel.

Garcia, the state bantamweight champion, will bring a 23-3-2 record into the fight. Muniz, who upset WBA bantamweight champion Jeff Chandler in 1983, has a record of 38-6-0.

The California Athletic Commission is expected to approve the 12-round match as a bout for the vacant state super bantamweight title.

Former Cal State Fullerton baseball standout Sam Favata will hold a baseball clinic for children ages 7 to 18 on the weekend of Jan. 11-12 at Edgewood High School in West Covina.

The clinic will feature 18 professional instructors and guest speakers, including Rick Burleson of the Angels, Jay Johnstone of the Dodgers, John Tudor of the St. Louis Cardinals, Glenn Hoffman of the Boston Red Sox and Cal State Fullerton Coach Augie Garrido.

The tuition fee of $45 per person ($75 for two children) includes a T-shirt, refreshments, videotaping and evaluation and a sporting goods raffle.

Mary Cahill, of the Chapman College women’s volleyball team, was named to the 1985 GTE Academic All-America second team by the College Sports Information Directors Assn. Cahill, a 5-foot 5-inch senior setter, also was a NCAA Div. III District 8 first team Academic All-American. A graduate of Orange High School and Golden West College, Cahill had 172 service aces and 2,353 assists during the 38-match season. . . . Darren Ward, 17, and Janet Evans, 13, of Fullerton Aquatics have been selected to participate in a 10-day training and research camp held by U.S. Swimming in Flagstaff, Ariz., Dec. 26 through Jan. 3. The purpose of the camp is to study the effects of altitude on athletes and to help prepare young swimmers who may represent the United States in international competition in the future. Bud McAllister, coach of Fullerton Aquatics, also was selected as one of the four coaches to direct the training . . . Registration is under way for the Holiday Men’s D/Novice slow-pitch softball tournament Dec. 28-29 at Avalon Park in Rubidoux. Entry fee per team is $130.
