Boys’ Roundup : Blount’s 70-Footer at Buzzer Gives Madison a Victory

With three seconds left in its game, the St. Paul High School boys’ basketball team had to feel good about its chances against Madison Friday night. The game was tied, 82-82, and St. Paul had Armando Ayala at the foul line.

Ayala had made his last six free throws in the game, but this time he missed. Madison’s Tony Blount grabbed the rebound, turned and threw the ball 70 feet, through the basket at the buzzer, and Madison beat St. Paul, 84-82, in a Kiwanis Tournament Unlimited Division game at Helix High.

St. Paul led, 41-40, at intermission, and Madison (4-2) took a 62-60 lead into the fourth quarter. Madison’s Eric Jackson led all scorers with 35 points, Jimmie Dean had 24 and Blount finished with 10. Matt Willig led St. Paul with 24 points, John Scott had 23 and Joel Willis added 13.

In other Unlimited Division play:

Mount Carmel 88, Monte Vista 76--Scott Boggins scored 28 points to lead Mount Carmel to the win at Helix High. Jim Tejcek added 17 points and Brendan Keeney had 14 for the winners. Mount Carmel led, 24-15, after the first quarter, but had its lead cut to 42-37 at intermission. Monte Vista was led by Melvin McFarlin with 24 points. Chris Marshall and James Gottel added 19 and 16 points, respectively.

Limited Division Hilltop 58, University City 45--Hilltop (5-6) outscored University City, 17-8, in the fourth quarter to break open a close game at Hoover High. Hoover’s Sergio Sandoval led all scorers with 19 points and David Mossman added 13. John Davis and Rod Cowell had 10 points apiece for University City.

San Pasqual 56, Chula Vista 55--Bill Prusinski scored a game-high 21 points to lead San Pasqual (5-3) to the win at Hoover High. San Pasqual extended a one-point halftime lead by outscoring Chula Vista, 11-4, in the third quarter. Chula Vista outscored San Pasqual, 25-18, in the fourth quarter, but never regained the lead. Jeff Knight scored 16 points for Chula Vista before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. Joe Klancher had 14 points and Tony Hyner added 12.

El Capitan 60, Valhalla 47--The Norseman made three more field goals than the Vaqueros, but El Capitan (6-2) won the game from the free throw line and advanced to today’s 6 p.m. Limited Divison final against Serra at Serra High. The Vaqueros connected on 26 of 39 free throws and pulled away by outscoring Valhalla (2-5) in the second quarter, 11-4. Steve Nowlan hit 12 of 14 from the line and led El Capitan with 24 points. Aaron Johnson added 18. Dan Chase and Troy Toolson paced Valhalla with 10 points apiece. Valhalla will play Mount Miguel today at 4:15 at Hoover High in the Limited Division third-place game.

Serra 61, Mount Miguel 59 (Double Overtime)--Deven Moran’s jump shot with 40 seconds to play in the second overtime gave the Conquistadors (9-1) the win over the Matadors (6-4) in a semifinal game at Serra High. Serra led, 30-22, at the half, but Mount Miguel, led by Mike Flores’ 18 points and 16 points from Lavon Reis, came back to tie the game in the fourth quarter. In the two overtime sessions, Flores scored all six of Mount Miguel’s points and Steve Smith scored six straight for Serra. Anthony Moore led the Conquistadors with 17 points, and Smith and Moran added 16 apiece.

Classified Division Castle Park 79, San Diego 76--Javier Nunez scored 21 points and Eddie Moreno added 16 to lead Castle Park (7-0) to the win at San Diego High.
