‘PURPLE’ PROTESTS

Share

The protest of “The Color Purple” by the Coalition Against Black Exploitation is without merit (Film Clips, by Jack Mathews, Dec. 20).

If this group of 20 black professionals finds this movie negative in its portrayal of blacks, then why didn’t they protest Alice Walker’s book when it won the Pulitzer Prize? Wasn’t the book as negative, if not more so, than the movie?

If anything, Steven Spielberg did an excellent job of glossing over the negative aspects depicted in Walker’s book. Have any of these people who are protesting read the book and seen the movie?

The real injustice is not with Spielberg’s movie or Walker’s book, but the movie and TV industry. If there were more of a balance of good and bad images of minorities portrayed in the media, then there would not be any need for this kind of protest.
