Efforts to rescue birds contaminated with crude oil spilled from a tanker were abandoned because workers were finding more dead birds than live ones. Nine skimmer boats continued to mop up oil from the ARCO Anchorage at Port Angeles, Wash., where the tanker ran aground Dec. 21, spilling 189,000 gallons of crude oil that has washed ashore as much as 40 miles away, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Greg Robinson. Cleanup costs were estimated at $1 million.
