The Unit 2 reactor at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant shut down during a test of its ability to respond to a sudden drop in electrical demand, a spokesman said. The reactor shut down during a test in which it was supposed to remain operating under adverse conditions, Pacific Gas & Electric Co. spokesman Ron Weinberg said. “Very few nuclear power plants have succeeded in performing this test successfully,” Weinberg said. Unit 2 testing is expected to resume in several days, as engineers work to correct any problems that could impede commercial operation, he said.
