San Diego Roundup : Celebrity Golf Tournament Set Monday

The third Steve Garvey Michelob Celebrity golf tournament, featuring more than 30 professional athletes, will be Monday at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. Registration is at 9 a.m., followed by a golf clinic at 10 and a shotgun start at 10:30.

Among those scheduled to play are Garvey, Rich Gossage and Graig Nettles of the Padres, and Bill Madlock and Orel Hershiser of the Dodgers.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Professional Athletes Career Enterprises’ Center for Career Development and the San Diego chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Several sports-related items, including a personal hitting clinic with Tony Gwynn of the Padres, will be on the block at the Cop’er Bowl Celebrity Auction tonight. The event, held in conjunction with Saturday’s Cop’er Bowl 10K Run and football game, will run from 6:30 to 9 at the Athletic Injury Center.

Other items to be auctioned are an evening in the broadcasting booth with Padre announcer Jerry Coleman, a tour of the San Diego Zoo and lunch with Rolf Benirschke of the Chargers and a soccer lesson from Juli Veee of the Sockers.

The Children’s Workshop, a developmental treatment center for educationally handicapped children, will benefit from auction proceeds.

A free demonstration of Shorin-Ryu karate, a fighting style known for its simple and aggressive attacks using the hands, elbows and feet, will start at 6:30 Tuesday night at the North Park Recreation Center.

The demonstration will be given by first-degree black belts Bruce Burke, who formerly taught karate at the University of Washington, and Julee Conrad.

Tony Campolo, an author and minister who chairs the Department of Sociology and Youth Ministries at Eastern College in Pennsylvania, will speak tonight at the seventh Fellowship of Christian Athletes teams and coaches banquet. The event, which honors local athletes and coaches, starts at 6 at the Scottish Rite Center.

Campolo has written several books, including “A Reasonable Faith” and “It’s Friday but Sunday’s Comin’.” Others scheduled to attend are Gill Byrd and Kellen Winslow of the Chargers.
