A traffic accident on the Artesia Freeway killed a 51-year-old Torrance woman and resulted in injuries to a California Highway Patrol officer, officials reported. The accident occurred after a car driven by Jack Davitian, 53, stalled in an eastbound lane of the freeway in the Bellflower area, according to a CHP spokesman. Davitian and his wife, Armena, left their car to summon help from a call box, and then returned to the traffic lane to wave away oncoming cars. Soon after, CHP Officer Judy Ward, 25, arrived and she and Mrs. Davitian were struck by the tanker truck. Mrs. Davitian was killed. Ward suffered numerous broken bones and cuts, and was listed in good condition at Long Beach Memorial Hospital.
