A suspect in the shooting of a Tijuana police officer escaped into the United States and was being sought Monday night by San Diego County authorities.

Bill Robinson, spokesman for the San Diego Police Department, said the man’s full name was not known, but that he goes by the nickname Diablo and is also suspected of smuggling illegal aliens.

Robinson said the suspect disarmed and shot a Tijuana policeman near the San Ysidro border crossing about 6:30 p.m. Monday. The officer, identified by Tijuana police as Juan Antonio Cervantez, suffered a flesh wound.

Robinson said the suspect is believed to be armed with a .357 Magnum handgun in addition to the pistol he took from the Tijuana officer.
