Scheer to Meet With Knicks Today for More Talks on a Nixon Trade

Shortly after the Clippers’ loss here Wednesday night, General Manager Carl Scheer took a train to New York, where he is expected to meet with Knick General Manager Scotty Stirling today in another attempt to trade point guard Norm Nixon for off-guard Darrell Walker.

If the Clippers can trade Nixon, it would make it possible for them to acquire guard Darnell Valentine from the Portland Trail Blazers, a move Scheer wants to make as soon as possible, sources said.

Even if Nixon isn’t one of the involved players, Scheer apparently still wants to acquire Walker. Sources said Scheer would not keep Nixon and Valentine, both point guards, on the roster very long. Valentine earns $245,000 in the final season of his contract. Nixon is being paid a reported $3.7 million over five seasons.

At a press conference Tuesday in New York, former Knick General Manager Dave DeBusschere said he was very close to a deal with the Clippers for Nixon last week.

“(The trade) could easily be concluded,” DeBusschere said. “The groundwork is (finished).”

Nixon first would have to waive the no-trade clause in his contract, and Nixon’s representatives say he might do it if a cash settlement is provided.
