PCAA Roundup : Banks Scores 31 Points to Lead Nevada Las Vegas’ 85-80 Win

Fred Banks made two straight baskets in the final minutes to give 12th-ranked Nevada Las Vegas some breathing room and an 85-80 Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory over University of Pacific Thursday night at Stockton.

The Rebels, 14-2 overall and 3-0 in the PCAA, were ahead, 74-71, before Banks scored following two UOP turnovers with about three minutes left. Banks finished with 31 points.

Anthony Jones added 19 points for Las Vegas, and Richard Robinson scored 13, including 12 in the second half.

Pacific (8-6, 1-2) trailed, 43-35, at halftime but rallied to take a 49-47 lead early in the second half on a three-point play by James Ray Richardson. The score was tied, 53-53, with 11:55 remaining, before UNLV went ahead to stay.

Rich Anema scored 17 points, and Christian Gray added 14 for the Tigers.

San Jose State 76, UC Santa Barbara 63--Ricky Berry scored 24 points to help his dad, Coach Bill Berry, get his 100th victory with the Spartans in a victory over the Gauchos at San Jose.

Ricky Berry made 9 of 11 field goal attempts, and the Spartans (9-4, 2-2) shot 69%, hitting 31 of 45 shots. They were ahead, 39-27, at halftime and built a 20-point lead during the second half.

Coach Berry is 100-84 in his seven seasons at San Jose.

Ontario Johnson contributed 11 points and 6 assists for the Spartans. Herb Simon scored 10 points, making 5 of his 6 field goal attempts.

Scott Fisher scored 15 points for the Gauchos (6-7, 1-3).
