Californians drove a record 10 billion miles on state highways in August, the state Transportation Department estimated.

That’s about the distance from Earth to the planet Pluto and back, the department said.

The estimate was based on traffic counts taken at 21 locations on state highways.

Actually, Californians drove about 20 billion miles, burning more than a billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel during August, the department said.

Travel on the 15,171-mile state highway system accounts for about half of all travel, although state highways are only about one-tenth of the state’s roads. That’s because almost all of the freeways are state highways.
