Uruguayan Sculpture

The “large and very odd sculpture at Playa el Emir” pictured in Sharon Dirlam’s article on Dec. 8 is a memorial to the hundreds of swimmers who have drowned there. Apparently the currents can be quite vicious, and the last one sees of drowning swimmers are their fingertips sinking into the sea. Hence, the photograph was anything but an invitation to Punta del Este.
