A Huntington Beach man and his 5-year-old daughter were killed when their car rolled over an embankment alongside California 60 in Moreno Valley, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said Monday.

Steven Paul Lambden, 26, was driving east on the highway on Sunday, traveling 60 to 65 m.p.h., when he swerved to the left, into the dirt median of the freeway, said Officer Mike Devine, accident investigator for the Highway Patrol.

Lambden’s car then swerved back across the two eastbound lanes, off the right side of the roadway and onto a dirt embankment, where it rolled over.

Lambden was pronounced dead at the emergency room of San Gorgonio Pass Memorial Hospital in Banning, a spokeswoman for the Riverside County coroner’s office said.

His daughter, Samantha, was riding in the front seat. She died at Riverside Community Hospital, the spokeswoman said.

Neither of the victims was wearing seat belts, Devine said.

Autopsies had not been completed Monday, and investigators were not sure what caused Lambden to swerve back and forth across the road.

Another daughter, Cheryl, 2, was strapped in a child-safety seat in the middle of the car’s back seat, but the safety seat was not strapped to the car seat, Devine said.

Cheryl suffered a severe concussion and a broken left leg. She was listed in stable condition at Riverside Community Hospital, according to a spokeswoman there.
