South County : Two Firms Fined Under Environmental Laws
Two Orange County firms have been fined a total of $4,250 after pleading no contest to charges of polluting or altering creek beds in violation of state environmental laws, a spokesman for the Department of Fish and Game said Tuesday.
The spokesman, Pat Moore, said Parker-Hannifin Corp. of Irvine was fined $1,500, ordered to pay an additional $1,050 in cleanup costs and placed on two years’ probation by Judge William Hopkins in Central Orange County Municipal Court.
The company was cited on Dec. 3, 1985, for allowing lubricating oil to flow into Lane Flood Control Channel, a state waterway which feeds into the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve. The oil did not reach the reserve, Moore said, but about 50 crayfish were killed in the channel.
Also in Central Municipal Court, Judge Gary Ryan fined Southern California Edison Co. of Santa Ana $1,000, plus $700 in costs, after the company was cited Nov. 22 for illegally rechanneling a portion of Oso Creek in Mission Viejo.
