A North Hollywood man was critically injured Wednesday afternoon when his car collided with a water delivery truck on Topanga Canyon Boulevard just south of California 118, the California Highway Patrol said.

Douglas Nankivell, 32, was air-lifted to Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills where he was listed in critical condition with chest injuries, a hospital spokesman said.

Nankivell was southbound on Topanga Canyon Boulevard at 2:10 p.m. when he swerved into oncoming traffic, striking the left side of the water delivery truck, Officer James Beaver said. Investigators do not know what caused the car to swerve, he said.

After the collision, both drivers lost control of their vehicles and the car and truck went off the road and tumbled down a 30-foot embankment, Beaver said.

The driver of the truck, Gabriel Pardo, 23, of Glendale was not injured, the CHP officer said. The truck sustained moderate damage.
