A week ago, the Northeast Louisiana women’s basketball program was put on probation for one year because of illegal recruiting tactics. The Indians, an NCAA semifinalist last season and ranked No. 19 in the country this year, will be ineligible for this year’s national championship.

This week, the mayor of Monroe, La. declared it “Northeast Louisiana Appreciation Week.”

“I can’t figure that out at all,” said San Diego State Coach Earnest Riggins after the Aztecs were blown out by Northeast Louisiana, 109-63, Wednesday night. “That’s all we needed for the entire town to be fired up when we got here.”

Lisa Ingram scored 29 points and Eun Jung Lee added 22 to help the Indians improve to 10-2. San Diego State, which lost by 44 points to Louisiana Tech Monday night, 87-43, fell to 6-8.

“We played all right for awhile but we have so many young players, it just took its toll on us,” said Riggins, whose team trailed 46-33 at halftime. “I’m hoping that this kind of game will help us in the long run.”

Lisa Stevens led the Aztecs with 17 points and Shelda Arceneaux added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
