MANILA — A nephew of President Ferdinand E. Marcos said today he has resigned his diplomatic post and will support Corazon Aquino, the opposition challenger to Marcos in the Feb. 7 special election.
Norberto Romualdez III told a news conference that he was quitting his positions as commercial counselor of the Philippine Embassy in Brussels and director of the trade center of the Assn. of Southeast Asian Nations in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Romualdez, whose father was former governor of First Lady Imelda Marcos’ home province of Leyte, said foreigners are reluctant to invest in the Philippines because of political instability and impressions of government corruption.
“It’s time we change the administration and that my uncle retires,” he said. “He deserves a rest, and I don’t know why he refuses.”
