Bochy, Padres Agree On a New Contract
Reserve catcher Bruce Bochy reached agreement Friday night on a new contract with the San Diego Padres, a development that reduced the club’s player salary arbitration list to four.
Terms and length of the pact with Bochy were not disclosed.
Bochy hit .268 in 1985 while spelling starting catcher Terry Kennedy. In 48 games, Bochy had 6 home runs and 13 RBI.
“We only carry two catchers,” Padre spokesman Bill Beck said. “Certainly, Bruce is important to the ball club even though he doesn’t play a whole lot.”
Bochy had joined four other Padre players in filing for salary arbitration on Wednesday. The others were outfielder Kevin McReynolds, pitcher Mark Thurmond, reliever Roy Lee Jackson and reserve infielder Mario Ramirez.
