Stadium Worker Falls Down Elevator Shaft

Share

A worker at Anaheim Stadium fell about 45 feet down an elevator shaft Saturday afternoon and was trapped there for more than an hour.

Scott Mills, 17, was driving an electric cart on the top level of the stadium when he apparently crashed through the doors of a service elevator and tumbled four floors to the bottom sometime between 1 and 2:30 p.m., Anaheim police spokeswoman Sheri Erlewine said.

The concrete walls of the stadium and the roar of motorcycles warming up for an evening Motocross competition muffled the sounds of the fall, she said. Workers noticed an odor of battery acid coming from the shaft and called the Fire Department. Firefighters pulled Mills out of the shaft at 3:45 p.m. The acid, spilled from the electric cart, made the rescue more difficult, she said.

Scott was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center, where he was reported in critical condition Saturday evening.
