The commanding officer of the aircraft carrier Enterprise, which suffered $17 million in damages after it ran aground Nov. 2, will be relieved of his duty later this month for his part in the incident, the Navy confirmed Saturday.

Under the command of Capt. Robert L. Leuschner Jr., 50, the nuclear-powered Enterprise ran aground on Bishops Rock, an underwater mountain 100 miles southest of San Diego. The collision tore a 40-foot gash in the outer port hull of the Alameda-based carrier.

In addition, four of the ship’s officers received reprimands in connection with the incident.
