Summery Warmth Drives Flocks of People to Beaches

Share

Summer-like temperatures caused by a high-pressure system pushed the mercury into the 80s in some areas of Southern California on Saturday and sent an estimated 139,000 people to Los Angeles County beaches.

Temperatures in the low 80s were expected today by the National Weather Service, with winds of up to 20 m.p.h. The high-pressure system is expected to give way to a dissipated cold front Monday and Tuesday, dropping temperatures into the 70s.

An estimated 90,000 people enjoyed 72-degree weather at Zuma and Santa Monica beaches. Hermosa Beach and Long Beach, where the temperature reached 80 degrees, attracted about 50,000 people.

The temperature at the Los Angeles Civic Center reached 88 degrees, short of the record 95 degrees in 1971 but more than 20 degrees above the normal high for the date.

San Gabriel, at 89 degrees, was the Southland’s hottest spot.

Coastal areas are expected to be clear through today with highs ranging from 76 to 86 degrees. Mountain and desert areas also should be clear, with highs in the upper 60s.
