Pac-10 Roundup : Huskies Have First Place All to Themselves, 73-72

Chris Welp had 27 points and 13 rebounds Saturday night as Washington took over the Pacific 10 lead by holding off Oregon State, 73-72, at Corvallis, Ore.

Welp scored 23 of his points in the second half.

The Huskies (10-6, 5-1) built a 68-64 lead when Shag Williams had a three-point play with 1:27 left and added a free throw with 1:08 remaining.

Jose Ortiz, who had 31 points and 10 rebounds, scored on two free throws and a layup in the final 14 seconds to bring the Beavers (9-5, 4-1) close at the finish.

Williams added 19 points for Washington, which won its fifth in a row.

California 75, Stanford 69--Kevin Johnson scored 23 points, including 12 in the last 8:23, to lead the Bears to victory at Stanford.

Johnson made six straight free throws in the final 3:49, including four in the last 14 seconds, to ensure the win.

Stanford (8-10, 2-4) took a 58-51 lead with 12:20 remaining when Johnson sparked a comeback that put the Bears (11-4, 3-2) ahead, 62-60, with 6:17 remaining.

Freshman Todd Lichti scored 22 points for Stanford.

Arizona 81, Miami 74--Steve Kerr scored 28 points and Sean Elliott added 25 points and 9 rebounds as the Wildcats overcame the Hurricanes in overtime at Miami.

Miami (8-7) led, 58-46, with 10:49 left, but Arizona (12-5) went on a 19-5 surge for a 65-63 lead. Miami sent the game into overtime when Mark Richardson’s shot with three seconds left tied the score, 69-69.

Arizona hit its first four shots in overtime to pull away.
