McKay Breaks World Indoor Record in 440-Yard Dash; Maree Wins Mile

Antonio McKay, who won a silver medal in the 1984 Olympics, set a world indoor record in the 440-yard dash Saturday night at the Eastman Kodak Invitational Track and Field Meet.

McKay, who won his Olympic medal in the 400 meters, won the men’s invitational 440 in 45.45 seconds to best the previous record of 46.40, set in 1984 by Sunder Nix of Indiana.

McKay, a former star at Georgia Tech, ran unattached in the meet. Walter McCoy of Track America finished second in 46.67, and Willie Smith, who ran unattached, was third at 46.84.

About 1,500 athletes gathered on the East Tennessee State University campus for the 10th annual meet that began Friday.

Sydney Maree won the mile in 3:53.79 seconds. George Mason’s Abdi File was second in 3:55.77, while Kip Cheruiyot of Mt. Saint Mary’s was third in 3:56.74.

In other events, John Tillman of Tennessee and Keith Talley of Alabama tied in the long jump at 25 feet 3 1/2 inches.

The Texas team of Terri Turner, Leslie Hardison, Barbara Flowers and Juliet Cuthbert won the women’s mile relay in 3:37.46. Tennessee was second in 3:39.94.
