College Basketball Roundup : Louisville Is Upset; Memphis St. Escapes

Sophomore guard Roger McClendon scored 24 of his 35 points in the second half as Cincinnati upset No. 13 Louisville, 84-82, Monday night in a Metro Conference game at Louisville, Ky.

Louisville (11-5 overall and 2-2 in the conference) held a 56-43 lead, but the Bearcats (7-9, 3-3) went on a 14-4 tear to pull to within three points with 10:29 left. McClendon had nine points during the run.

Cincinnati tied the game on a 20-footer by McClendon with 5:29 left. Tony Wilson, fouled after picking up a loose ball, hit two free throws to put Cincinnati ahead, 80-76, with 29 seconds left.

Louisville cut the lead to 81-80 on a layup by Jeff Hall with 11 seconds left, but Wilson broke free on the inbounds play for a layup and was fouled. His free throw with eight seconds left made it 84-80.

Hall scored at the buzzer.

Louisville shot 60% from the field, hitting 30 of 50 shots, but had 20 turnovers against Cincinnati’s half-court trap defense. Cincinnati shot only 48.6% but had four more field goals.

Myron Hughes added 18 points for Cincinnati. Hall, Milt Wagner and Pervis Ellison each had 16 points for Louisville.

Memphis State 68, Mississippi State 64--Andre Turner scored on a layup with 23 seconds left and the undefeated and third-ranked Tigers escaped Hattiesburg, Miss., with a Metro Conference victory over the Golden Eagles.

Vincent Askew tipped away an inbounds pass and the ball was fed to Turner, whose basket broke a 64-64 tie. Baskerville Holmes added two insurance free throws for Memphis State (18-0, 4-0) with four seconds left.

Southern Mississippi (9-9, 1-4) held a 64-59 lead with 2:15 left and had a chance to increase the lead, but Derrek Hamilton missed a one-and-one free throw with 1:43 left. Memphis State got a basket by Holmes and three points from William Bedford to pull even.

Bedford had 24 points for the Tigers, and Holmes added 17. Hamilton had 18 for Southern Mississippi, and Michael Jett scored 16.

Georgetown 76, Villanova 72--Reggie Williams scored 22 points to lead the 15th-ranked Hoyas past the Wildcats in a Big East game at Landover, Md.

It was a rematch of last year’s NCAA championship game in which Villanova pulled one of the biggest upsets in college history.

Villanova (12-8, 4-2), which fell behind by 18 points in the first half, rallied behind the scoring of veterans Harold Pressley and Harold Jensen to pull to within 58-54 with 6:33 remaining.

Georgetown (14-3, 5-2), got four free throws from Williams on a 6-1 surge to pull away.

David Wingate added 18 points for Georgetown. Jensen had 18 points for Villanova and Pressley scored 16.

Notre Dame 91, Hofstra 67--Donald Royal scored 20 points and the 16th-ranked Irish ran away from the Flying Dutchmen at South Bend, Ind.

Notre Dame (11-2) pulled away from a 39-35 halftime lead and built a 12-point lead midway through the second half before putting the game away with 12 straight points.

Frank Walker scored 19 points for Hofstra (7-8).
