College Basketball Roundup : No. 4 Georgia Tech Tops No. 2 Duke

Bruce Dalrymple scored 21 points Tuesday night, including four free throws in the final 35 seconds, in leading fourth-ranked Georgia Tech to an 87-80 Atlantic Coast Conference victory over second-ranked Duke at Atlanta.

He also had 6 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals in sparking the Yellow Jackets to their 15th win in a row.

Georgia Tech won it at the free-throw line--hitting 13 of its last 14 attempts. Tech led by 11 points with just over three minutes remaining, but Duke cut the margin to four points four times in the final 64 seconds.

Mark Price led the Yellow Jackets with 25 points, but it was the all-around play of Dalrymple throughout the game that caused Duke to lose its second in a row after opening the season with victories in its first 16 games.

The Blue Devils lost to top-ranked North Carolina, 95-92, last Saturday, and Tech’s win set up an ACC first-place showdown for this Saturday when the Jackets visit North Carolina.

The victory lifted Tech to 16-1 for the year and 5-0 in the ACC. Duke fell to 16-2 and 4-2.

Mark Alarie led Duke with 26 points and Johnny Dawkins added 17, including 9 in a row in the final 3:03 when he sparked the Devils’ comeback attempt.

Kansas 98, Oklahoma 92--Sophomore Danny Manning ignited an early second-half burst as the seventh-ranked Jayhawks knocked the fifth-ranked Sooners from the ranks of the unbeaten with the Big Eight Conference victory at Lawrence, Kan.

Kansas, which led by as many as 15 points in the second half, was forced to stave off a furious Oklahoma rally in the closing minutes of the game to earn its win.

Darryl Kennedy’s basket with 44 seconds left brought Oklahoma to within two at 94-92, but a pair of free throws by Mark Turgeon and Cedric Hunter’s dunk off the fast break slammed the door on the Sooner rally.

Manning led Jayhawks (17-2) with 24 points.

Only the second-half play of 6-foot-7, 240-pound junior center David Johnson kept the Sooners in the contest. Johnson scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the second half for Oklahoma (17-1).

Alabama Birmingham 75, Jacksonville 67--With his team on a two-game losing streak, Coach Gene Bartow said his 18th-ranked Blazers needed a win at Jacksonville, Fla., to stay in the chase for the Sun Belt Conference title.

Thanks to guard Steve Mitchell, who scored 22 points and helped spark a 25-4 first-half spurt, the Blazers, 17-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference, got the win.

Jacksonville, which fell to 11-6, 2-2, was led by Otis Smith’s 29 points.

Missouri 74, Kansas St. 70--Derrick Chievous scored 17 points during the second half and guard Jeff Strong added 16 as the Tigers overcame a halftime disadvantage and then withstood a frenzied comeback attempt to post the Big Eight Conference victory at Manhattan, Kan.

Chievous finished with 23 points, including 11 for 11 from the foul line, and 11 rebounds for Missouri, 16-5 overall and 3-1 in the Big Eight. Strong had 22 points.

Kansas State, 13-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play, was led by Norris Coleman, who had 28 points.
