Brea’s 83 police officers will receive a 12% salary increase over the next two years, according to an agreement ratified this week.

The first year’s increase, retroactive to Jan. 12, will boost salaries of beginning officers to $2,182 per month and those of officers with five years’ experience to $2,799. In January, 1987, beginners will start making $2,313 and experienced officers $2,968.

Between salary and benefits, the overall package--approved by the Brea Police Assn. last Friday and by the City Council on Tuesday--represents a 6.6% increase in the first year and 6.3% in the second, according to Assistant City Manager Denise Ovrom.

The agreement on the two-year contract was reached after two months of negotiations. The current contract expired Jan. 11. Of 52 association members voting on the new contract, 47 approved it, Brea Police Assn. President Bill Hudson said.

Included in the contract is an agreement that Spanish-speaking employees will be paid $50 a month more for their bilingual skills and an increase in the city’s payments toward medical insurance and an allowance for uniforms, Hudson said.

The police employees serve both Brea and Yorba Linda.
