‘THE LAST PICTURE SHOW’ CINEMA HAS RUN ITS LAST SHOW
The old West-Tex Theater, used for interior scenes for the Academy Award-winning 1970 movie “The Last Picture Show,” has shown its last movie and will be razed.
In the film, the theater’s closing spelled the end of an era for the fictional small Texas town of Anarene. Now residents of this community feel the same sense of loss as the film’s characters.
“The theater was an important part of the community,” said Will Morris, who grew up here and had a bit part in the movie as a gas station attendant.
“When we dated, we went to the picture show. It holds a lot of memories. Almost everybody went to the show.”
Exterior shots in the film showed the movie house in nearby Archer City, birthplace of Larry McMurtry, whose novel was the basis of the film.
