COMMERCIAL TIME

“PLAY WITH THE BOYS.” Exude. Rah! Rah!/Greenworld. Exude’s debut album reaffirms the commercial sensibility that the Orange County techno-pop group showed in its wily 1984 parody “Boys Just Want to Have Sex”--but with a little more depth. The title tune is a rarity in the teen-dance genre: Beneath its catchy chorus and bouncy rhythms is a plea for sexual responsibility. In “Get It Together,” Exude frames an anti-drug message in 3 1/2 minutes of melodically inventive, relentlessly infectious synth-rock. Elsewhere, the band alternates less successfully between swirling, breathy Simple Minds-style pop and middleweight rock a la Greg Kihn. Although not completely satisfying, the LP shows genuine pop songwriting talent at work.
