POP CAPSULES : KIND OF GOOD
Forget that Roslyn Kind is Barbra Streisand’s kid sister. She’s too good--and too special--to have to worry about comparisons with older siblings.
Her performance Saturday night at Michel’s Entourage was a classic example of first-rate cabaret singing. The material--delicately balanced between standards like “Fascinating Rhythm” and “What’ll I Do” and originals by Kind’s musical director, Norman Mamey--revealed a stunningly articulate singer who is on the verge of becoming a superb musical actress as well.
Her only flaw was an occasional tendency to take the last eight bars of a song up a half-tone for a big, Las Vegas-type ending. Although Kind clearly has an instrument that can belt on demand, she is at her best with the one-on-one dramatic interplay of songs like “What’ll I Do” and “All The Things You Are.”
