Despite stiff opposition from the business community, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted 10 to 0 to bar the city from buying goods or services from any firm doing more than $5,000 worth of business in South Africa. City Controller John Farrell said about $25 million worth of city contracts would be affected. Mayor Dianne Feinstein, who must sign the measure to make it law, has gone on record against it. The bill allows a firm with South African ties to do business with the city if that company is the only provider of a needed commodity.
