Lavalle Ousts Edberg in U.S. Indoor Upset

Unseeded Leonardo Lavalle of Mexico defeated third-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5, Tuesday in one of four upsets in the second round of the $465,000 U.S. Pro Indoor tennis championship.

In other upsets, Slobodan Zivojinovic, a Czech who came into prominence last year by beating Mats Wilander at Wimbledon and John McEnroe at the Australian Open, defeated 15th-seeded David Pate, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3; Marty Davis defeated 10th-seeded Scott Davis, 6-1, 7-6, and Ben Testerman ousted 13th-seeded Thierry Tulasne, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.

Ninth-seeded Andres Gomez struggled to win, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, over Vince Van Patten, and fourth-seeded Yannick Noah advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ricardo Acuna of Chile. Sixth-seeded Kevin Curren beat Tim Wilkison, 7-5, 6-2, and seventh-seeded Tim Mayotte beat Andy Kohlberg, 6-2, 6-4.

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl will make his first tournament appearance today.
