Iowa State Coach Johnny Orr said Kansas’ high national ranking was enough to inspire his team to its 77-74 upset Tuesday night in a Big Eight Conference game at Ames, Iowa.

“The fact they were No. 4 in the nation really fired us up,” Orr said.

Jeff Hornacek sank six free throws in the final minute as Iowa State stopped a Kansas rally and held on to beat the Jayhawks for the fourth time in the last five games.

Iowa State (13-6 overall, 4-2 in league) had missed 9 of 10 free throws, and Kansas (19-3, 4-1) had whittled a 10-point Cyclone lead to one before Hornacek began making his free throws to secure his team’s 13th straight victory at home.
