Six members of the 1st Marine Division were injured late Tuesday when the five-ton truck they were riding in overturned during night maneuvers, base spokesman Sgt. Art Alejandre said.
Lance Cpl. Jose Rodriguez, the 23-year-old driver of the troop transport truck, suffered spinal and head injuries and was transported by Life Flight to UC San Diego Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Wednesday.
Pfc. Stephen D. Litson, 19, suffered internal injuries and underwent surgery at the Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition. The four other Marines in the truck suffered minor injuries.
The accident occurred during a routine training exercise on a dirt road in hilly terrain on the northern part of the base, Alejandre said. Base officials are investigating.
