LOCAL SHUTTLE COMMEMORATIONS

These are among Southern California memorials for the Challenger crew:

The Olympic torch is remaining lit above the Coliseum peristyle in Los Angeles as a silent tribute, largely because $2,700 in donations from private firms enabled the city’s Coliseum Commission to keep the flame burning for another week.

Schoolchildren in Los Angeles-area schools were to observe a minute of silence Thursday and today beginning at 8:21 a.m. during what would have been schoolteacher Christa McAuliffe’s live telecasts from space.

Flags on all county buildings will continue to fly at half-staff through Monday.

The Rev. Robert Schuller will hold an interfaith service in memorial of the shuttle crew members this morning at 9:15 a.m. in the Crystal Cathedral, 12141 Lewis St., Garden Grove. Archbishop Roger Mahony of Los Angeles will participate. President Reagan’s tribute in Houston will be telecast live.

The Riverside Interfaith Fellowship, an ecumenical group of local clergy, will sponsor a memorial service this morning at 11:30 a.m. at Temple Beth El, 2675 Central Avenue, Riverside.

A memorial service is scheduled this morning at 11 a.m. at West Los Angeles College Learning Center, Room 112, 4800 Freshman Drive, Culver City.

Temple Beth-El Crescent of Hollywood will hold a memorial service for the “magnificent seven” on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.

The Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Church in Little Tokyo is planning a memorial service on Sunday at 10 a.m.
