Former San Diego State football Coach Doug Scovil is reported to be Buddy Ryan’s top choice to become quarterback coach of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times reported Thursday that Ryan is expected to hire Scovil as one of his assistants.

Ryan worked as an assistant to Scovil at the University of the Pacific and both were assistants with the Bears in 1978.

After completing his fifth season as head coach at SDSU, Scovil was fired in December. Ryan, the defensive coach of the Bears who came up with the “46” defense, signed a five-year contract to coach the Eagles Wednesday.

Scovil did not return phone calls Thursday. His wife did say that the Scovils have been friendly with Buddy Ryan for years.

Ryan is attending a meeting of scouting combines in New Orleans and was unavailable for comment Thursday.

Scovil has a reputation as an excellent passing coach. He has coached Jim McMahon and Marc Wilson at Brigham Young, Roger Staubach at Navy and John Brodie of the San Francisco 49ers.
