Valdez Is Stopped by Martinez in 10th at the Olympic
Mario Martinez, the World Boxing Council’s No. 4 junior-lightweight contender, scored a 10th-round knockout over Lenny Valdez Thursday night at the Olympic Auditorium.
Martinez, 130, of Mexico, quickly pressed Valdez, 131, also of Mexico, landing counterpunches, hooks and crosses to his head and body, and was well ahead after six rounds.
Valdez then rallied briefly, but Martinez regained command, and referee Marty Denkin stopped the bout at 2:47 of the 10th. Martinez improved his record to 36-3 with 26 knockouts. Valdez fell to 26-6.
In a companion 10-round featherweight bout, Louie Espinoza, 123, of Phoenix, scored a second-round knockout over Angel Valle, 128, of Mexico.
