Countywide : Murderer Who Escaped From Jail Still at Large

Share

Ivan Von Staich, a convicted murderer who escaped from the Orange County Jail last Sunday, was still at large Saturday, sheriff’s spokesman Larry Khune said.

Khune said that Staich had not been sighted recently but that deputies spent the day investigating possible leads.

Staich, 29, was convicted in December of second-degree murder and attempted murder for a 1983 attack with a gun and a claw hammer on his former girlfriend and her husband.

He was awaiting sentencing on those charges when he and another inmate, Robert Joseph Clark, 23, overpowered an unarmed sheriff’s deputy in the jail’s rooftop recreation area, pried up a security screen and rappelled to a roof below. Wearing their orange jail jump suits, they jumped to the ground and fled.

Clark, accused of murder and robbery, was arrested without incident Friday at a Tustin motel, where he was discovered sitting beside a swimming pool.

Initially, authorities on Friday believed that both Clark and Staich were in a room in the west section of the Sixpence Inn but officers found the room vacant.

Deputies have said they do not know if Staich is armed but that he should be considered dangerous.
