A Garden Grove man was shot in the throat and shoulder early Monday because he refused to turn over his wallet to two robbers.

While Benjamin Cornelio, 22, remained in the intensive care unit of Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, police continued to search for his assailants, according to Westminster Police Officer Larry Woessner.

According to a police account, Cornelio and his three roommates--Jose Castillo, 27, Inocente Clavico, 20, and Domingo Telles, 21--were approached by two men as they were driving away in their station wagon from an apartment complex in the 8300 block of Westminster Avenue about 3:40 a.m. Monday.

The two men, both carrying small-caliber handguns, blocked the station wagon’s exit with their own car, walked up and demanded money. The men refused and a fight followed. The other three Garden Grove residents received superficial cuts and Telles lost about $50 to the assailants, who fled in their car.

Police could not say whether the men knew their assailants.
