Orange : College Facility Delayed Pending Impact Report
Acting on the request of a citizens’ group, the Planning Commission has delayed action on Chapman College’s plan to build a four-story, 92,000-square-foot classroom building until the college provides a report its on impact on the area.
The college had submitted a statement that the construction would not adversely affect the surrounding area. But Jack McGee, city associate planner, said the statement was not sufficient. The commission voted unanimously to require an environmental impact report.
Debbie McLaughlin, the president of a group of residents near the proposed building, said they are especially concerned about the visual impact that the 67-foot building and 151-space parking lot would have on the area, which contains some of Orange’s oldest buildings.
McLaughlin said the group also is worried about increased traffic and parking problems.
Jerry Derloshon, a college spokesman, said that the college will have an environmental impact study done and a report prepared.
