Chicago Bull guard Quintin Dailey--repeatedly in hot water over drug use, missed practices and other problems--failed to show up for Tuesday night’s game against the Detroit Pistons, General Manager Jerry Krause said.

“A mystery women called our trainer, Mark Pfeil, at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, saying that Quintin was out somewhere on the toll road with a flat tire and that two state tow trucks passed him by,” Krause said.

“But he is going to have to prove to me he actually had that flat,” said Krause, who vowed he would make “a complete and thorough investigation” of Dailey’s absence and will suspend the player if “his story is a fabrication.”

Dailey, who is averaging 16.3 points a game off the bench this season, has twice undergone drug rehabilitation, missed several practices and failed to catch team planes for out-of-town games.

“Under National Basketball Assn. rules, the Bulls have no choice but to conduct a complete investigation because this kind of incident has repeated itself again and again,” Krause said.

Dailey, a 1982 first-round draft pick who earns a reported $325,000 a year, missed 13 games at the beginning of this season after admitting himself into a California drug treatment center. He returned to action on Nov. 19.

A women’s group picketed Bull games during Dailey’s rookie season of 1979-80 after he pleaded guilty to an assault charge at the University of San Francisco, where he went to college. He was sentenced to a three-year probation.
