South Bay : Beach Upgrading Sought
South Bay beaches could get a $2.2-million overhaul next year if the state Department of Parks and Recreation approves grants for several projects proposed by the county.
The Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors has applied for state grants to repair restrooms at Torrance beach and Manhattan Beach; to tear down and rebuild restrooms in Redondo Beach; to repair slopes and build several beach access ramps in Torrance and along the Esplanade in Redondo Beach, and to build new lifeguard towers at Cabrillo Beach and Torrance beach.
About half of the money would be used for work on restrooms, with more than $360,000 of that going to rebuild restrooms on avenues G and I in Redondo Beach, said Larry Charness, planning chief for the Department of Beaches and Harbors.
The two Redondo Beach restrooms, which Charness said are structurally beyond repair, would be the first beach restrooms ever torn down and rebuilt by the county, he said.
The $2.2-million request is part of a $5.75-million proposal submitted to the state by the department for beach projects throughout the county, Charness said. The state is expected to make a decision in early March, he said.
