South El Monte : Ordinance Revised

Share

The City Council has revised an ordinance that would require improvements to most of the 237 metal buildings in town. The revision would require owners to cover metal buildings adjacent to streets with non-metal material or an acceptable new metal siding. Portions of other metal buildings on the property visible from the street also would have to be renovated. Parts of buildings not visible from the street would have to be painted the same color as the improved portion. Buildings entirely hidden from view would be exempt from the measure.

On Jan. 23, the council, apparently by mistake, introduced a similar ordinance that would have required only partial renovation of metal buildings bordering the street. The revised measure was introduced by a 4-0 vote last week at a joint meeting of the council and the Recreation Commission. The revision is scheduled to come up for a final vote at the Feb. 13 meeting. If it passes, property owners would have one year from March 15 to apply for building permits and until March, 1989 to complete the required work.
