Irvine : UCI Chooses Its Team for ‘College Bowl’ Meet

After picking the best students from 12 teams that competed, UC Irvine has selected its four players for the annual brainpower “College Bowl” regional competition.

The regional this year will be held Feb. 15 in Fresno. Representing UCI will be Tom Grant, 23, a graduate student from Long Beach; Richard Miller, 21, a senior from San Diego; Mark Sugars, 24, a graduate student from Irvine, and Mike Ontko, 20, a junior from Costa Mesa.

As a warm-up for the regional competition against students from other Western universities, the UCI team on Wednesday challenged--and thrashed--a faculty team, 235-5.

College Bowl, which stems from a former television program of the 1960s, involves asking competing college teams an array of questions about history, mathematics, geography and numerous other fields.
