Dave Andreychuk scored five goals, one short of the modern NHL record, and the Buffalo Sabres moved out of the Adams Division cellar Thursday night at Boston with an 8-6 victory over the Bruins.

Andreychuk, who had never even had a regular-season hat trick in his four years in the league, scored twice in the first period and three times in the second, but was held scoreless in the final 20 minutes.

The 22-year-old Buffalo center, who entered the game with 19 goals, also assisted on a goal by Norm Lacombe.

Red Berenson scored six goals for the St. Louis Blues in 1968. The last player to score five goals in a game was Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 15, 1984, against the Blues.

The victory, combined with Hartford’s defeat at Detroit, moved Buffalo two points ahead of the Whalers in the fight for fourth place, the last division playoff spot.

Andreychuk’s second-period outburst gave the Sabres a 7-4 lead, which held up even though the Bruins rallied to make it 7-6 on third-period goals by Mike O’Connell and Rick Middleton. Paul Cyr’s goal wrapped up the victory for Buffalo.

Edmonton 6, New Jersey 4--Paul Coffey scored two power-play goals and Wayne Gretzky added three assists, including the 800th of his career, as the Oilers handed the Devils their ninth straight home defeat at East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory extended Edmonton’s unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2). The Devils are 0-9-1 in their last 10 games.

Gretzky’s third assist, a pass across center ice to Jari Kurri, set up a goal at 5:02 of the third period to give the Oilers a 4-2 lead.

Rick Tocchet started the Flyer comeback by scooping the puck past Blues’ goalie Greg Millen at 2:21 of the third period. Brad McCrimmon tied the score, 3-3, with a 50-foot slap shot between Millen’s pads at 3:38. Craven beat Millen, waist high, to put the Flyers ahead.

Detroit 4, Hartford 3--Claude Loiselle scored at 2:22 of overtime at Detroit and the Red Wings handed the Whalers their eighth straight defeat.

Detroit’s Greg Smith tied the score, 3-3, at 4:31 of the third period when he intercepted a clearing pass and scored on a 55-foot slap shot.

Minnesota 8, Toronto 7--Bob Rouse’s first goal of the season with 45 seconds left in overtime pushed the North Stars past the Maple Leafs at Bloomington, Minn.
