Sunset League : Huntington Beach Nips Edison on Pemper’s Jumper at Buzzer

Steve Pemper scored on a 15-foot turnaround jumper at the buzzer to give Huntington Beach High School a 48-46 Sunset League victory over Edison Friday night at the Chargers’ gym.

The Oilers tied the game at 46-46 with 40 seconds left on a 16-footer by Rico Vitz. Edison worked the clock down to four seconds before missing its final shot. The rebound went out of bounds with Huntington Beach being awarded possession with two seconds remaining.

Vitz threw a baseball pass from the baseline to the 6-foot 7-inch Pemper, who leaped at the free throw line, caught the pass, then turned and sank the game-winning shot.

Pepmer led the Oilers with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Vitz had eight points and six assists.

Huntington Beach’s Darren Snow and Edison’s Mike Henderson were ejected from the game with a minute left in the third quarter when a fight broke out after Snow was fouled by Henderson.

Westminster 63, Fountain Valley 53--Tom Dever led all scorers with 20 points for Westminster (3-6, 6-16), while teammate Mark Austin added 14. Glenn Gordon paced Fountain Valley (3-6, 12-12) with 16 points.

Ocean View 69, Marina 53--Junior center Ricky Butler scored 25 points, had 13 rebounds and blocked six shots as the Seahawks won their ninth consecutive league game. Junior center Mark Georgeson led the Vikings with 18 points.
