Initial Phase of Andrex Office Building Opens in Torrance

The first phase of a high-tech office project, described as “a departure” development, has opened in Torrance.

It is the Andrex Building at 20101 Hamilton Ave., one of a few research-and-development office facilities to combine aesthetics and human amenities with features geared to the changing needs of high-tech firms, according to Howard Mann, president of Torrance-based Andrex Development Co., the developer.

Designed by R. Scott Johnson, director of design for Pereira Associates of Los Angeles, the L-shaped building with large window bays and mottled exterior using reddish paint will depart from usual R&D; offices in its striking and colorful design, Mann said.

The first phase, 119,000 square feet of space, has been totally leased by Ashton-Tate, the independent microcomputer software company. Phase 2, with an equal number of square feet, is expected to be completed in April.
