The CBS television network has bought the world rights to a West German television series on the British Royal Family.

CBS and the Hamburg-based Norddeutsche Rundfunk (NDR), which made the four-part series called “Royalty,” signed the deal at the International TV Programmes Fair in Monte Carlo, an NDR spokesman said.

The series, which shows the royal family at home in England and on state visits to Portugal, Africa and the United States, was one of the most popular programs on West German TV between last Christmas and New Year’s Day.

The NDR camera and reporting team was the first foreign TV crew ever to receive permission to follow the royal family, he said.

NDR refused to give financial details of the deal.
