Pasadena : Land Swap Turned Down

Share

The Board of City Directors has voted against negotiating a land swap with the YWCA and the YMCA for property that would have been used for a new jail and a police and public safety building.

Proposed by City Manager Donald McIntyre, the deal included swapping a parcel of city-owned land near City Hall for two sites owned by the service groups across the street. City directors, on a 5-2 vote, decided not to negotiate the deal because they have not determined whether to relocate the existing jail or refurbish it.

What to do with the dilapidated jail and police building has long been a problem for city directors, who say the structure is unsafe. A ballot measure to finance a new jail failed in the 1984 general election.
